The biosub is originally developed from the biocoil, a photosynthetic
bioreactor, BioCoil.
The Sewage Sisters, whose goal was to clean the sewage from our lake,
first built the biocoil in 1993. At that time the group measured the amounts
of nitrates and phosphates being used by the algae. The project has continued
for more than a decade and has slowly developed and evolved from the original
idea. A new challenge presented itself when Lloyd Godson, BioSub,
contacted our class and asked if we could do the same system, but measure
the amount of carbon dioxide being used and the amount of oxygen being
released. In the spring of 2006 three members joined the original four
members to help contribute ideas to the group. As new designs and ideas
were created and as time went these designs developed and improved to
make a system that would fit Lloyd’s.

Several problems have appeared, but all with a solution
that one of the members are eventually able to solve. Once in Australia
materials will have to be found, ordered, and brought to build the final
biosub. One of the largest problems is earning the money to travel to
Australia to build the final design of the biosub for Lloyd. The problem
is the school doesn’t have the funding to send us to Australia
and the group’s families can’t afford the trip there. If
anyone has any information on funding for grants or sponsorships please
contact the biosub group here.
