At the beginning of the year, my partner and I decided that in order to get more accomplished, we needed to split off and have two projects going inside the main Noxious Weed Project. Over the past two years, we have been struggling with the technology part of the weed project, which focus’s on using the Global Positioning System (GPS) to take points that allow us to track the growth and spread of the weeds. We also use programs like Pathfinder Office and Arc View to place the points on maps. Along with learning how to better run our equipment, we were also faced with other projects.
While I focused more on putting together a brief overview of the project for an informative sign, Robby began scheduling meetings with a U.S. Forest Service employee to teach us how to better use our equipment. With new equipment that Mark Blickenstaff helped us purchase and a better understanding of that equipment, Robby began teaching underclassmen how to use the equipment so that next year when they pick up the project, they will be able to get more accomplished.
This year, we again attended the SITE Showcase day at Northwest Nazarene University. For weeks we put together power point presentations to present to other students as a way of sharing project ideas.
After the presentations were completed, I began work on a sign display about the Noxious Weed project. The sign display also contains information about the top three noxious weeds in the Cascade area. My current project is now putting together brochures that will be handed out to campground hosts and hopefully put on the trail sign along with my display.
Webmaster Note: Robby and Sarah will not be returning next year because they graduated this year. They have done a great job on their project and training others to take over their project. They will be missed.
